Geoff Boyle sometimes still has trouble believing how much things have changed since he first opened the doors a quarter of a century ago.

Back then, renting movies was a major component of the Charlottetown Video Pros location he co-owns with his wife, Diane, although they also offered a line of electronics like televisions and VCR’s. Now the movies are gone and the line of electronics that contains items that would have bordered on science fiction in 1983– televisions mounted on walls that can be disguised as mirrors or pictures when not in use, and an automation system that can have your favourite television program ready for viewing before you open the front door.

In 1983 the business was located in the Charlottetown Mall and part of a franchised chain based in Moncton. The business moved to it’s present location at 97 St. Peters Road 11 years ago. The chain has since disappeared, but Video Pros is part of Audio-Video Unlimited– a group of over 60 independent electronics stores across the country.

However, he said there are some things that remain the same– first and foremost the emphasis on full customer service. Boyle said that phrase now means more than ever. Back in 1983, he said that likely meant taking the television or VCR out of the box and hooking it up. Now, it can mean wall mounting a television; programming a universal remote that can operate anything in a house or business that can be operated off remote control, or installing a satellite or automation system.

He said an ability to keep on top of trends in the business has been a key to the company’s success. They were one of the first to be in the movie rental business and the first to be computerized. He recalled "back then, we pretty much had to right our own program." However, as more and more players got into that business, Boyle began to look to other avenues. One such opportunity was the growth in cell phones.

"Back in 1983, they were big and cumbersome and it was usually just business people that had them," he said. "Now, lots of kids carry them around."
